"50 is the New 25...: How to Embrace Aging with Grace"

Updated: Jan 4, 2022

Age is a mindset. Sure the physical changes are undeniable but some are avoidable by shifting how you embrace aging. One of my wellness "sheros" is Ernestine Sheppard. Mrs. Sheppard is a 79 year old body builder who didn't begin her fitness journey until age 50. She still runs 10 miles most days.

I had the pleasure of contributing to the Eat This! Not that! Article "Over 50? Never Make These Health Mistakes." Here are a few of the mistakes I shared and what to do instead. Honestly, these tips are ageless, you can start using them now even if you're not 50 yet.

Never Make These Health Mistakes:

1.'Think You're too old to...' We live in an ageist society. There is a false narrative that you have to stop exploring or trying new things at a certain age. Choose to release the mindset that "People of a certain age can't ____." Instead, embrace the mindset "I still can try." To help with this, consider making a vision board with people over 50 that you think are vibrant and thriving. The purpose of your vision board isn't for comparison but a reminder that you still can thrive after 50.

2. Skip your annual health screenings. After years of doctors visits, people sometimes get tired of going to the doctor as we age. However, now more than ever, getting your regular screenings for metabolic diseases such as high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, and screenable cancers can help improve your vitality.

3. Quit Moving. Regular movement, also known as exercise, is an essential part of aging gracefully. Exercise helps reduce the risk of age-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, dementia, osteoporosis, and more. Aim to move daily with a goal of 150 minutes per week of exercise, per the American Heart Association and CDC physical activity requirements. Movement should include a combination of cardiovascular and resistance exercises. "
